Vreny’s Top 10 Favorite Songs

My students often ask what kind of music I listen to.

Following are the songs I would take with me if ever I were to be banned to a deserted island.
These are the songs I have listened to a billion times on nonstop repeat for many years, and that I have never gotten tired of.

Sis (Erkan Ogur)
I had a lot of Turkish friends at Berklee while living in Boston.
One of my friends from Istanbul introduced me to fretless classical guitarist Erkan Ogur.
Following is one of my all-time favorite songs. It’s a song Erkan Ogur wrote for the Turkish movie Bir Omurluk Misafir.
Bright Size Life (Pat Metheny)
Bright Size Life is Pat’s debut album. It blows my mind.
The whole album is unbelievable.
Here’s the title track.
Kansas City Shuffle (J Ralph)
The following song is featured in the movie Lucky Number Slevin.
I heard this song in the ending credits of the movie, and it was love at first sight.
Crank your stereo.
Growing Old Is Getting Old (Silversun Pickups)
A couple of years ago, one of my guitar students brought in a Silversun Pickups song he wanted to learn.
I had never heard of them before.
I fell in love with this song upon a first listen. Every time I hear this song, I like it even more.
They make me want to move to Silverlake. Some pretty darn amazing bands out there.
Feel Good Inc (Gorillaz)
This song always intrigued me. It has one of the best grooves ever written.
I could play that bass line for hours on my bass.
Just A Thought (Gnarls Barkley)
What a darn powerful voice and presence, right?
This is one of these songs I wish I had written.
I have to see CeeLo Green live. He’s one of the few artists who I regret not having seen live yet.
Here’s why…
Move On Up (Lettuce)
You gotta love a band named after a vegetable.
This has Eric Krasno on guitar, from Soulive. A fellow Berklee grad yaaay!!! (No wonder they are so amazing hahaaa)
Paranoid Android (Radiohead)
For as long as I can remember: Paranoid Android has always hit a nerve with me.
I played it live with my band Icky’s Ego in the past, and it’s always an audience pleaser.
This is not just a song: it’s an “experience”.
I consider this song a masterpiece.
Il Jouait Du Piano (France Gall)
I’m sorry to disappoint all my hard-rock friends. 🙂
I have always been and will always be a huge France Gall fan.
I’m also a sucker for amazing bass playing… this is it, folks!!!
I mean… look at the guy: that bassist oozes out stage presence.
Samba Mambo (France Gall)
And yes… another France Gall song.
Everything about this song is sick: the heavenly melody, the ridiculously awesome bass lines, the groove…
Eagle (Abba)
I know… I lied: I said “10”, but there is no way in hell I was going to leave out this Abba song.
Best song ever. 🙂
Hey Ya! (OutKast)
Like I said… I lied.
10 songs are impossible. 🙂
Yes… there were 12. If ever I were to be banned and I could take 12 songs with me, these would be the ones I take.
If I could only bring 10: it would be the first 10.
“Hey Ya” is a trip. (Those lyrics are hysterical lol)

There you have it: these are the 12 songs I wish I had written. 🙂
Thank god somebody did!
These songs remind me of all the reasons why I’m so deeply in love with music.
